Hey Rubenerd, I have heard about you on The Overnightscape cast. I had to make a double take to see if you where the same Rubenerd. Welcome, take a look around all kinds of stuff going on here. Hope to catch you in the chat sometime.
Chris200 15:11, April 24, 2006 (AKDT)
- Hey there Chris, thanks for the post! Yes I can assure you I am the Rubenerd you heard about :-). I love Whole Wheat Radio; I'm going to uni now and I share a house with two other guys, and we must have it on whenever we're awake (albeit the low-bitrate version because we have cheap internet!).
- I love the idea of a Wiki for WWR, it really makes this whole network feel like a real community. I have to admit with the old site I simply listened to the cast and that's it; not because I didn't like the site but just because it was a great thing to listen to when doing schoolwork; thesedays though I'm trying to et more involved.
- Hope I see you in the chat too :-). Rubenerd 07:37, April 25, 2006 (AKDT)
Howdy!
You are definitely cool Rubenerd! Love your page ... it's great to find out more about you. Someday I hope to catch you listening when I'm on-air cuz I can't wait to say Hi to you on the webcast. Jimbob 06:03, April 21, 2006 (AKDT)
- Wow, thanks for the kind words JB! Very excited by this Wiki based site, looks great. Hopefully sometime soon we'll be awake and tuned in at the same time, timezones permitting... I think Alaska and South Australia are almost completely opposite! We'll see :). Rubenerd 23:54, April 21, 2006 (AKDT)
Hi, Hope your studies in Maylasia are going well and that you stay healthy. -- ReWoven 06:34, February 11, 2007 (AKST)
Great to see you!
Great to see you again Rubenerd! Thought I saw you in Recent Changes but been flying around the pages so much I didn't stop to really take note. Hope all is well with you and thanks for coming by and thanks for helping out! The Special:Wantedpages and other Special:xxx reports are generally not a good place to kick in right now as I'm still rearranging the guts. But adding info on artists is really appreciated ... and since you're technical, adding embedded video from Youtube is pretty easy to do (and fun) if you're looking for something in general. Or, anything that explains "How to" which you feel is missing is good ... particularly if you take a bunch of screenshots, document what you did, and put it together on a Category:How to page.
Hope that gives you some idea of what's needed and is still something fun for you. If not, and you think of something else, don't hesitate to ask me and/or jump in. It's just exciting to know you're hanging around for a few days! I'm gonna go have to check out your sites and see what you've been up to.

Your Mom
I just read about your Mother and I'm so very sorry for your loss. She sounded very special and I know you were close. My thoughts are with you.
Rubenerd, I'm so sorry to have read this news about your mother. I know you were close to her. She is still very much with you, dear, I hope you know that. Wishing you unending comfort, ReWoven (talk) 20:03, March 27, 2008 (AKDT)
Sincere condolences
Rubenerd ... I just saw the link about your Mum and wanted to say as heartfelt as possible ... I'm sorry for your loss. It may sound silly but I always thought about your Mum whenever I saw your name here. She brought smiles when you and she stopped by. In some incredibly powerful/strange way, I know she was a very special person. May you carry on that spark of life.
Happy Birthday!

Tag images
Ruben! Thank you for putting images on tags! It's great to have some help. One thing to remember is to crop tight. It's such a small square, the subject of the image needs to be as large as possible. Also, if you can, flip the image so it's facing the tag. This obviously won't work for famous people, someone playing an instrument, or an image with wording on it. Thanks again—Mert (talk) 06:34, April 25, 2008 (AKDT)
Bingo!
You are so cool! That artist page layout is just too cool. Thanks for showing us all the power of the concept and how radically different it can all look. I am truly impressed. You ever need a job reference, I'd be happy to provide one just based on your obvious passion for the machine and your skill at being able to program what you dream. You have a very bright future in software and system design if you choose to pursue it...
- Wow, thank you, I'm really humbled by your praise, I appreciate it. See, I'm even forming fractured sentences as a result! I might just take you up on that offer one day, as it is currently I have no formal material from teh intertubes. Thanks for opening a new door :-) --Ruben
More than one skin/stylesheet
I've been having almost too much fun! Can one user have more than one style, or would that be serious overkill? :-D --Ruben (talk) 11:40, May 2, 2008 (AKDT)
- I would say "Yes". At the point that we have a problem with too many skins/stylesheets being listed, we could just tag " More choices..." at the end and go to a library page with tons of choices. At this point, I'd like to encourage as many different styles as possible so that people can see the wide variation possible, learn from what other people are doing and so I can see what whacked out ideas my code may have to handle. Jimbob (talk) 12:16, May 2, 2008 (AKDT)
- Cool, thanks :-). Don't worry, I do have some serious ideas this time! --RubenBot5000 (talk) 12:18, May 2, 2008 (AKDT)
Testing Wiki
I think what you've done is fantastic. The page on the difference between print and web would be really useful here and I love the wheat background! (Just heard your phonegram. Too funny.
- Hehe, I admit I created that testbed wiki because I'm so addicted to editing pages, so when that ability was taken away from me it was torture! I still think the editing page does need some work, but I'll transfer all the files and text over here once I've finished my weekend homework.
- Good to be back huh? :-)

GIMP!
In the past I have noted that you are student, fan, and supporter of Linux and BSD. But what caught my attention today is that you recently mentioned GIMP. Not that I am a master, but I am too a fan/student wanting to learn and enjoy more about the GNU Image Manipulation Program. To which I offer you a bribe of sorts, have you ever heard of 'Meet the Gimp'? For me it is a great video resource that teaches short lessons each week about GIMP. If you have ever heard of other sites or tutorials about the GIMP, please let me know? Jac (talk)

Assignment
Okay - well here's something that would be highly useful I think. I saw how you indicate a screen [ button ] which is cool. But it couldn't be that hard to make a stylesheet that looks somewhat like the real grey [ Save page ] or [ Show preview ] buttons etc. Inside a template called { {Button|what it should say} } I could see that being helpful when trying to document stuff to newbies. I suck at CSS but you appear to be an expert. Anyway, just sayin' in case you're bored.

Past chats category
I'm glad you liked the chats category. I think this could be a great thing eventually, I'm imagining being able to go back in time several years and look back on what we were chatting about!
Or it could be I'm a touch obsessive compuslive and the idea of having stray pages was keeping me up at night
Hope you're having a great day! --Ruben (talk) 16:46, May 7, 2008 (AKDT)
- I was actually thinking of doing the same thing, so I think it's a very good idea.
:) I agree it is cool to have this history. If it wasn't for the editing conflict issue, it would be about perfect. Kelli (talk) 16:50, May 7, 2008 (AKDT)
Horoscopes
Hey Rubenerd! I heard your discussion (as a phonegram) of how to turn off the template for astrological sign on my profile page. I'd like to do that, since I don't have my real birthday in there, and it's incorrect anyway. I wasn't quick enough to catch how you said to do that...could you explain it to me?
As a side note, do you know the coding to display my avatar? I'd really like to use it as part of my signature...something like this:
--Bisbonian (talk) 06:57, May 10, 2008 (AKDT)
- Sure thing! I went ahead and added the code to the top of your user page to hide the horoscope; you can Edit to see the changes. Basically it's just a short few lines of CSS that hides the table that the horoscope template is made from.
- Horoscopes were never my thing; plus I read one the day my mum died that said I'd be having a joyeous day with her that day, which kind of put me off them somewhat!
- I'm afraid I'm not sure about changing your sig to show your avatar, as far as I know the only way to do it is just to enter it manually, but I could be wrong. I'm currently in the middle of several uni assignments but once I'm done on Monday I'll be back on the Wiki in full swing and will be looking into it; the avatars are what I miss most from the chat!
- Peace, health and happiness :-)

Today's Topic
Hi, Ruben. Just letting you know I tagged you to do the next Today's topic. Kelli (talk) 17:49, May 11, 2008 (AKDT)
In Singapore in October?
Reuben: I just found out that I'm going to be coming to Singapore in mid-October (to speak at a conference on shipping registries, of all things). Will you be there then? E.D. Egg (talk) 13:22, May 16, 2008 (AKDT)
- Unfortunately I study in Adelaide in the second half of the year so I won't be there. If I can be of any help though feel free to ask! Ruben (talk) 02:22, May 18, 2008 (AKDT)
PHOOEY. It would be so cool to know someone there. Still, I'll almost certainly want to pick your brain for the interesting things I should do, places I should eat, things I should see . . . (I'm hoping to have a few days before my conference to explore.) E.D. Egg (talk)
Where is there?
Hi Rubenerd, I just saw your post on the Listener Status page and I wondered, what takes you to all these various places? Home is in Singapore? I had the feeling that you were either British, or Australian; is that true? Just wondering, there are so many people at WWR who have life styles different than mine. It's interesting to see how the world works outside the borders of the US. Cub Driver
- G'day Cub!
- Hehe yeah none of our family really understand where we're from or where we're going. I was born in Sydney Australia and my mum was an Aussie, but my dad is German. Aside from a stint in Melbourne and Brisbane down under, because of my dad's job ever since I was a little kid we've been hopping around cities in Southeast Asia. First place we went to and are now currently living in again is Singapore.
- Because Singapore is so central to the rest of Southeast Asia you can get to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei etc very cheap on aeroplanes, and Hong Kong and Taiwan are just a few hours away too. Because Singapore is just a city state, if you want to go on a family trip to another place you have to leave the country; I guess compared to Australia or the US where you can travel geographically a huge distance and still be in the same country.
- Actually unfortunately my latest hopping around wasn't for much fun, my mum recently lost her battle with cancer and I had to go to all the places we lived around here helping to close bank accounts, get medical records from hospitals, give notes to people etc. Was a pretty heavy trip, seems both Jim and I were doing lots of similar things over these last few weeks :(.
- But we learn to stay strong, and I do appreciate living in this really dynamic and exciting part of the world, especially right now! If you're ever in Singapore for the first half of a year (I study in Australia half the year) I'd be more than happy to meet up for a coffee or beer :-)
- Cheers!

Discussion page headings
Don't know if this will help or not - for comparison purposes, I took snapshots of the Discussion page using Opera (9.5) and an older version of IE (6.0.28...) running under Windows 2000 Professional. Sorry, I don't have a newer version of IE. 12-stringer (talk/contribs) 11:06, June 20, 2008 (AKDT)
Listener status
Am back from travelling (I wish I could say for pleasure!) now sitting in my comfy and badly worn computer chair again surrounded by blinking computer monitors and WWR blaring out the speakers. You have to be away from home to appreciate it I think, plus I'm in my PJs and it's 11:22am! Attire suited to radio ;-).
The rest of Asia is really progressing at a blinding speed, but it's still nice to come back to Singapore where all the public transport is reliable, the streets are clean and there are tree lined streets even in the middle of city. Dang it, having lived in so many places I think this is the closest I've ever come to feeling like I have a home in this world, it's a really, really nice feeling!
Have more commitments today but I'm glad to be back, hope to see you all around here again soon!
Prosperity, health and happiness
Ruben (talk) 19:31, June 2, 2008 (AKDT)
- Rubenerd, that is very interesting to hear about Singapore. I had a completely different picture. I had a friend who lived in Hong Kong for some time (2 years) and opted to come back to San Francisco and live. And I'm very happy to hear about your feeling of home there. I'm a home body, myself, and the stability is a saving grace. Had lived in the same neighborhood for the past 30 years and just moved 2 miles away a year ago...which feels like different, and very welcomed world now. Hope you have the chance to go a bit inward and revive, dear. ReWoven (talk) 05:07, June 3, 2008 (AKDT)
CDs arriving?
Hey Ruben - I was just checking the US Postal Service software I use and they don't have a package shipped approx. 6/19/2008 marked as delivered. I think that's the Rod Picott CDs. Have they arrived? If not ... um ... uh oh. Jim (talk/contribs) 23:03, July 10, 2008 (AKDT)
- As far as I know the CDs haven't arrived yet, but I'm not too worried the Singapore customs people can be pretty slow sometimes with parcels that come from the States. I'll let you know the instant I get them :) Ruben (talk/contribs) 23:07, July 10, 2008 (AKDT)
MOC player?
Hi Ruben;
Thanks for the info on the MOC audio player. I remember using Midnight Commander so I thought I would give it a try.
So far, without success. It is installed with WWR added to the right hand playlist but does not connect.
The MOC player website indicates I need libmad with libid3tag to support the mp3 audio format.
There are several "libid3" type files on my Ubuntu system including "libid3tag.so.0" which is in the /usr/lib/vlc/demux directory.
It also has a number of "libmad" files in various other directories.
Do I need to specifically point MOC to one or some of these file?
Thanks!
Countrydave.

Best wishes Rubenerd!
I admire you for the choices that you made regarding your mum. My dad was taken by cancer when I was in college. I was working on a Masters degree and arranging a wedding and busy with the stuff that goes on in a young person's life at that age. In hindsight, I should have taken 6 months off to be with my dad at the end; in the big picture, I would have gotten so much more out of that 6 months with him than I ever did at school. I can't change the past, but I did learn a lesson from it. When my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, I spent as much time with hm as I could, I said the things that I needed to say.
For what it is worth, in my book, you have your head on straight. See you around the WWR site. Cub Driver
Miss You Already
I'm really gonna miss you Ruben but I'm 100% behind you doing what you need to do in other areas. You've got a great spark and creative flair. I think you will accomplish great things in life. It is an honor to know you. We'll be in touch when we can and how we can via blogs, RSS, websites, etc. Take the best of care my friend... Jim (talk/contribs) 18:23, July 15, 2008 (AKDT)
