Beukeboom is a listener who lives in Florida just north of the state capital of Tallahassee. The nick "Beukeboom" comes from his favorite NHL player, Jeff Beukeboom formerly of the NY Rangers. Incidentally, "Beukeboom" is a Dutch word meaning "birch tree."
Beukeboom underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery (roux-n-y) on March 2nd, 2006. His surgeon was Dr. Eliot Sieloff and the surgery was performed at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital early in the morning. The surgery was successful and Beukeboom's weight loss has gone well thus far. As of September, 2008 he has lost over 200 pounds (equivalent to a whole person! or one Paris Hilton plus her luggage and her little doggie, too) and has lost 24 inches off his waistline.
His heaviest weight was well over 425 pounds. His obesity was featured on two news reports on WCTV.
Incidentally he has blogged about his surgery and subsequent weight loss in order to offer his experiences to those interested in and possibly contemplating gastric bypass surgery.
Beukeboom has a rather lengthy list of hobbies. He comes from a family of collectors and seems to have inherited a "pack rat" obsession from his Uncle on his Father's side of the family. Some of his collections include: CD's, old cork-lined soda pop bottle caps, Boy Scout memorabilia (specifically CSP's & OA flaps), guitars, sports jerseys (mainly football and hockey which he wears on occasion), pro-grade wrestling masks (which he only wears on Halloween), hot sauces (which he reviews on his website), baseball caps (not an intentional collection, but one that just grew on its own from ones given to him as gifts and also freebies he recieved while working at WCTV).
Beukeboom also tries to play guitar. He's not very good at it and has never performed in public. He keeps to simple songs especially some Jimmy Buffett tunes. He took lessons for a while from a local musician but had to stop due to financial reasons. He hopes to find someone who can help him actually learn some songs.

One of the small things that survived at my inlaws' home in Gulfport was this can of Mardi Gras beer that my wife had collected back in 1983. She thought it might become a collector's item but it never did. It was stored in the closet in her old room and was found floating in floodwaters inside after the hurricane. We now keep it on a mantle in our Florida home. Photo taken June, 2006. |

For whatever it's worth, I am now officially off probation at FDLE. I made it through the probationary year, my superiors are extremely pleased with my work and everyone has been supportive and nice. Although my work is not exciting and not very interesting (data entry usually isn't either) it's steady and once the economy improves, I probably can move into other areas.
Also, an update on the gastric bypass surgery from March 2, 2006:
I have officially lost over 200 pounds and have lost 24 inches (that is two FREAKIN' FEET!) from my waistline. I now can buy clothes "off the rack" in just about any store selling men's clothes. This is something I haven't been able to do in more than two decades. It's all still hard to wrap my head around. I look at myself in the mirror and still see that old 425+ pound guy (I know I weight more than that but the scale at my family physician [at that time] only went up to 425 and I was pegging it out). I try to take a power walk around the block which is a mile as many times during the week and am trying to lose about 15 more pounds. Those are proving hard to lose.
Anyway, I realise that it's not polite to blow one's own horn but....
TOOT-TOOT!
