Trivia, story behind the song, etc.

My truck had just thrown a rod, so I bought a used car to replace it. I was on a long walk, north, through Seattle, on my way to pick up the car. Someone was practicing violin on the top floor of a house. Their window was open. They played a little trill, three notes that stuck in my head for some reason and became the beginning of the verse melody for "Crossing." By the time I arrived at the mechanic's lot, I was humming the first half of the verse. After that, the melody stubbornly resisted my efforts to develop it further. Eventually, though, the rest of the song came along - the lyrics, the rest of the melody - in similar bursts of inspiration over the course of the next three years.

The verse melody always felt like it belonged in an Eastern European folk song. I was happy that it could be coaxed, in the end, into more of a pop-rock direction. [[1]]

Lyrics

Crossing the Desert, Crossing the Sea

Here in this room we're miles from each other
Nothing feels true, it's like we're on opposite ends of the world
Crossing the desert, crossing the sea
I'm searching for you, you're searching for me
Crossing the desert, crossing the sea
This life is a strange country

Oh, I wander alone, all on my own
If you are my home, then how can it be,
If you're here with me, I feel so far
From whoever you are?

Somehow you survive my peaks and my valleys
And oh, I endure the hunger and thirst you put me through
Crossing the desert, crossing the sea
You're searching for me, and me for you

Oh, you are a secret, you keep it too well
I am a stranger to myself
Crossing the desert, crossing the sea
The sweet mystery
Of you and me

Whatever I do
All roads lead to you
Whatever I do
All roads lead to you
What else can I do?
All roads lead to you
You're everywhere from here, Love
Yeah, you're everywhere from here
You're everywhere from here, Love
Yeah, you're everywhere from here

Wherever you go, you know I will follow
All of my years, a life as long as the world is wide
Only the Moon and stars as my witness
Only the Moon and stars as my guide
Only the Moon and stars as my witness
Only the Moon and Sun and stars

You circle me like the Sun
The Sun will set and the Sun will return
You circle me like the Sun
The Sun will set and the Sun will return

Ha ah ah, Ha ah ah ah ah, ah Ha ah ah

Whatever I do
All roads lead to you
Whatever I do
All roads lead to you
What else can I do?
All roads lead to you
You're everywhere from here, Love
Yeah, you're everywhere from here

Ha ah ah, Ha ah ah ah ah, ah Ha ah ah
