New neighbors

Here is a list of new online neighbors and collaborators who've signed up in the last week. One of the things that is most helpful is welcoming them into the community. Clicking on the "Talk" page link and leaving a message helps get over the initial "size shock" of this site. Maybe you can offer to help them write their user page? Or explain how to upload photos? Whatever you do is appreciated and serves as the glue between all of us.

Rehab is going well, if I could keep my dogs from underfoot. Going to have a bunch of old (I mean Old) friends in this labor day weekend. I stocked food they are bringing everything else. Including a strange variety of musical instruments. Most are staying over so they won't have to drive. Should be a great break. KodiBear (talk/contribs) 13:21, August 29, 2008 (AKDT)

We had the opportunity to visit Nashville Monday through Wednesday of this week. Work and pleasure. Of course when in Nashville one must visit Tootsies! As luck would have it our hotel was a block off of Broadway.

Went to a great show this past Friday night in NYC -- The Robert Cray Band and Keb' Mo'. The only problem was (and has always been)that a theater/concert hall just doesn't work for me as a blues venue. It seems too sterile for such "earthy" music. There's just something about the combination of the blues and an old, poorly lit, fire-trap roadhouse, wooden tables carved with barely distinguishable names and initials, walls covered with old rusty signs, faded photos from past performers, and at least ten layers of paint, the pungent smell of stale beer and decades-old urea (in the men's room only of course), and patrons and barkeeps that look like they have pasts and futures better left a mystery . . . Am I alone with this thought? Kimchifox (talk/contribs) 08:23, August 24, 2008 (AKDT)
Nope, Kimchi, I'm with you. Well put! — Mert (talk/contribs) 16:54, August 27, 2008 (AKDT)

Life is good, and we have a lot going on. Work is busy, and I am transitioning to a new project. Home is busy, we are putting in a hybrid HVAC system by adding a heat pump to existing oil heat. And we are going to try to get in a little bit of play time visting people and places in the West Virginia hills in the next few days. As an aside, it is amusing to watch the political speaches at the conventions.

G'day Jim - I hope you enjoyed the two New Zealanders I sent your way a month ago- the photos looked very funny! We continue to get reports of Tony & Rhonnda's trip.

Don't be surprised if more of the kiwi contingent show up over time. Chillita (Carol)

The storm known as Fay has blown through the area, bringing with it too much rain and some flooding. Working Friday night at the TV station, we were off the air for an hour and a half. On arriving home I find that the electricity is out.

I was an hour and a quarter late for work Saturday night, because the road I normally take was closed due to flooding. Took another road... also flooded. Another road... same thing. I eventually found a non-flooded road. I only got the electricity back on tonight, after two days. There were other outages that had to be seen to. I'm OK. --terri (talk/contribs) 21:00, August 24, 2008 (AKDT)

Geez Teri maybe it's time to get a boat? Glad your OK KodiBear (talk/contribs) 13:18, August 25, 2008 (AKDT)

A few comments about iTunes. Not all music on iTunes is DRM protected, there's iTunes Plus music without DRM. I regularly buy songs there, because, for one reason, I can buy there without a credit card, but also because of DRM free songs. I don't want to advertise for commercial organizations but Apple's Steve Jobs took action personally to free at least a part of their music library from DRM, by negotiating with record companies. Also it's not so much Apple or the iTunes store who decides that music is with or without DRM, it's the artists and their record companies. Much of the music of alternative / independent artists on iTunes is DRM free. there are also ways to get around this copy protection, like burning it to a cd and rip it again. Thanks for the good info! Jim (talk/contribs) 00:10, July 20, 2008 (AKDT)

iTunes links

You probably noticed some of these hanging around. Here's the deal:

  • You click on the icon and you are taken to the iTunes store (Windows or Mac) where you can get a 30 second preview of the individual track and/or buy it for $0.99 - or you can buy the whole album.
  • WWR is supposedly going to make 5% for any purchases you make clicked through our link. Just like CDBaby, if you click, then no matter what you buy at iTunes for the next 24(?) hours, we get a 5% kickback.
  • Music you download from iTunes is crippled by "digital rights management" which is just a way to say you buy a copy and may or may not be able to play it on a bunch of devices. You probably know more about it all than I do since I don't have an iPod. Bottom line: if you like iTunes, go for it. Unlike CDBaby which I support 100%, you're on your own with Apple.
  • In the left-hand menu, if you see one, it points to the current song being played. So no matter what page you're on or what you're doing, you can click it and whatever song was playing when the page loaded will be displayed in iTunes.
  • Other places that you see one (songs coming up, songs just played, request shows, etc.) you can click it and it goes to that song on iTunes. Great way to get a 30 second snippet preview of songs before you request them! To hear the preview, just click on the song in iTunes.
  • CDBaby does sell entire CDs as MP3s without DRM (great description at this link BTW. We don't get a cut, but that's okay with me. CDBaby has always been a working inspiration to me as how a commercial independent music website can be run.

Let me know on my talk page if you have comments or opinions. Jim (talk/contribs) 22:56, July 17, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi Mr. Monkey,

Sometimes the I-Tunes link is available and sometimes not. I appreciate the ability to buy one song, but, there have been several times when I could not find the link? Thank you! Sharpston (talk/contribs) 09:51, July 28, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi, Sharpston. As you probably know, Jim is on vacation for the next few weeks. My best guess is that not all songs are available on iTunes and a link only displays for songs that are available. If you find a case where that isn't true, please provide the details for future troubleshooting. Thanks. Kelli (talk/contribs) 09:58, July 28, 2008 (AKDT)

Thank you, Kelli for the info - It probably was that all the tunes were not available on I-Tunes. Sorry to wait so long to thank you. Sharpston (talk/contribs) 14:43, August 5, 2008 (AKDT)

Hi, Mr. Monkey/Mr. Monkey substitute, I'm kinda new here, although I discovered WWR awhile back when I realized my music was being played here. I've got a new CD I sent in a few weeks back, and am trying to figure out how to set up an artist page. I'm sorry that I'm a little technodyslexic and not used to the wiki way yet! Thanks for any pointers you can give me. maggie (talk/contribs) 05:57, August 20, 2008 (AKDT)

Welcome, Maggie! Jim will put your CD in the library when he gets back from vacation (and has time). An artist page will be created at that time which you will be able to edit if you like. I hope that helps. Kelli (talk/contribs) 06:27, August 20, 2008 (AKDT)
