Is something like "One vocalist either performing solo or with a band" acceptable for a Solo Vocalist definition? Kelli (talk) 18:57, May 31, 2008 (AKDT)
I think this tag might be unnecessary. Essentially, any solo artist is a solo vocalist. Using background vocals on a record wouldn't change that. If the sound was something where the group harmonies are essential to the sound (think CSNY) that would be the only instance where I think this tag wouldn't apply. Maybe we need a tag that differentiates using that line of demarcation. Otherwise I think a solo artists music fits this tag every time. Just my two cents :-) Noneyet (talk)
- I agree it's not very useful and I'd be fine with getting rid of it. Kelli (talk) 08:11, June 1, 2008 (AKDT)
To me "solo vocalist" is a tune that has one single vocalist. If there are background singers, it's not a solo vocalist, IMO. I do like the tag, particularly for songs by extraordinary vocalists. sparx (talk/contribs)
- Yeah it could be useful with that definition. It's definitely not being used that way now. Kelli (talk/contribs) 19:08, July 1, 2008 (AKDT)
It occurs to me... What do we do with tunes in which a single vocalist harmonizes with themself? I don't know the technical term, but it involves recording tracks at separate times and then mixing them together. sparx (talk/contribs) 21:12, July 1, 2008 (AKDT)
- That came up in chat yesterday and I don't know the answer. I don't think I'd recognize it unless I had the album credits so probably wouldn't label it as Solo Vocalist. Kelli (talk/contribs) 07:32, July 2, 2008 (AKDT)
- If we are hard-core about the definition being one vocal (no harmony/no backing vocals) ... i.e. what happens when someone picks up a guitar and sings live, then studio magic self-harmonizing would not be Solo Vocalist. I am thinking that hard-core definition is a good one because it would insure a show of "Solo Vocalist" would likely get me X minutes of unadulterated singing by solo vocalists.
