Discuss Band
How do you use the Band tag? (I'm looking for consensus to create the definition.) I tend to only use it on artists that are marketed as bands. Kelli (talk) 12:32, May 30, 2008 (AKDT)
One last ditch effort at persuasion: If you put together the votes for "three or more instruments" and "people who play together regularly" you get as many votes for keeping the tag as you do for eliminating it . . . I'd be sad to see it go, because I think it's a meaningful designation. E.D. Egg (talk/contribs) 18:03, July 7, 2008 (AKDT)
As I suggested below, I'd use it for people who actually play together regularly. So even though I have two or more instruments on my of the tracks in my album, I'm not a band. But Bearfoot or Malinky or Finest Kind (all of whom I saw this weekend at a festival) are bands. E.D. Egg (talk/contribs) 05:39, July 7, 2008 (AKDT)
- I added your suggestion as another voting option. Now I wonder if we could use Solo Performer and Band on artists like you (with backing musicians), only Band on groups like Bearfoot, and only Solo Performer for only one singer/musician. Or is this getting out of control?
Kelli (talk/contribs) 07:54, July 7, 2008 (AKDT)
I've been using it when they look and sound like a band - more than two people - some of my duo's stuff was tagged "band" and I'm hesitant to remove them because I don't know why it was used, exactly
Obviously more than 2 instruments used? Sounding like more than 2 people singing? So do you think it should be only used if there's definitely a band playing? Or in the artists name? Cater (talk) 15:31, May 30, 2008 (AKDT)
Er, for me, it was in opposition to a SOLO performer. If I can hear more than one person playing (in an obvious way) then I'll tend to tag it as Band. My original intent was to be able to hear just solo performer music vs. band music. But I'm very open to changes or even dropping it if others think it's stupid because it probably applies to 40%-50% or maybe more of the music library. Jim (talk) 22:59, May 30, 2008 (AKDT)
- I don't know for certain of course, but I'd guess that there are fewer solo performers than band by that definition. Most solo artists have a band on their albums. Maybe we need a Solo Performer tag and a better definition for Band? (Although I really don't want more tags.
) Kelli (talk/contribs) 06:24, June 10, 2008 (AKDT)
From a performer viewpoint I think using it only for groups marketed as a band is too limiting. Some artists, like myself, have songs that are definitely produced as a 'band' versus a 'guy with a guitar', and there needs to be a distinction. I've been using 'acoustic' and 'band' as separate tags for the songs to which that applies. My personal thought is that if a song has drums, it needs a 'band' tag. Noneyet (talk)
- Drums are definitely one way I describe a band (I though my thinking was off base 'till I read your comment), but a group of people playing various instruments and none of them drums would be a band to me, too. Lots of gray area on this one. sparx (talk/contribs) 20:26, July 1, 2008 (AKDT)
I agree the band tag maybe too limiting. I see 3 possible tags - solo artists, solo artist with back up musicians, band. I have seen the band tag on a solo artist with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and vocals on a song. I don't see the band tag of really being any use whatsoever anyway so is it really irelevant (since it is being applied to almost every song).Hoonah (talk/contribs) 12:02, July 1, 2008 (AKDT)
My take on it: A Solo Vocalist is a single person singing either A capella or with an instrument they themselves are playing. Solo Instrumental would be one person playing an instrumental piece with no other accompaniment. Duo Vocalists would be Two people who perform together regularly, one or both could sing, one or both could play an instrument. Trio would be any threesome that plays together regularly. Any of the above could have songs which may be backed by a Band, and such a song would call for a "With Band Back Up" Tag. Any group of 4 or more Musicians who perform together regularly under a common band name would be a Band. Kazookid (talk/contribs) 12:38, July 9, 2008 (AKDT)
- I'm with Kazoo on this. A solo vocalist who puts down a dozen tracks of her/his voice is still a solo performer, and still a solo performer if the one person plays all the instruments. For my money I would tag Nikel Creek, say, as a folk group rather than a band, but would be happy to have them called band. Peterdale (talk/contribs) 0906 14 July NZT
Discuss Solo Performer
Should we have a Solo Performer tag? (Shows could include or exclude instrumental.) I believe this would also allow us to drop Girl/Guy With Guitar and we could have solo performer shows with instruments other than guitar. Thoughts? Kelli (talk/contribs) 15:35, July 2, 2008 (AKDT)
Voting
I'm not sure what all to add as voting options, so please feel free to add/correct. Kelli (talk/contribs) 15:35, July 2, 2008 (AKDT)

What to do with Band
Delete
(i.e. Define as anything that is not a solo performer)
*Jim (talk/contribs) 22:43, July 3, 2008 (AKDT) Anything that isn't solo performer will assume to be band (i.e. more than one person making the music) - otherwise we end up with "Band" on 60%+(?) of the songs - a lot of work and a huge category

- JohnA --JohnA (talk/contribs) 11:29, July 7, 2008 (AKDT) I thik that if we have a "Solo Performer" tag, we should also have a "Duo" and possibly a "Trio" tag. I know a lot of people that don't think of a trio as a band, but also know many that do.

Define as having three or more different instruments
Define as a group of people who play together regularly
- E.D. Egg (talk/contribs) 13:11, July 7, 2008 (AKDT) (but if this one doesn't win out, my second choice would be "three or more instruments."

- Dean (talk/contribs) 14:59, July 11, 2008 (AKDT)Dean I will go with a group, hopefully 3 or more, but have seen some multi-instumental duos that are a band
- LuAnna (talk/contribs) 05:38, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) - Yes, KEEP THIS TAG! There is a difference between a solo artist who records with back up musicians and a band that records and performs as a group. Use to describe those who perform together as a group. I will gowith 3 or more but some threes are still better defined as trios. I definitely think two is a duo no matter how many instruments they play. Even if the tag isn't used to make sets, it is quick useful information to see when looking at the What's Playing page.
- Kelli (talk/contribs) (I don't agree that band is anything that is not a solo performer. We could use Solo Performer and Band on solo artists with backing musicians, only Band on groups like Bearfoot, and only Solo Performer for one singer/musician.)

- Seems to me that if they call themselves a band, and have a band name (i.e. the Waybacks, the Mammals, etc.), then they are a band.--Bisbonian (talk/contribs) 22:12, July 17, 2008 (AKDT)
Generally apply the Band tag to Artist pages instead of Songs
I shoulda thought of this option before. Remember that tags can be put on any page. (I'm not sure off the top of my head if a show can be created from Artist page tags, but if not, it should / will definitely be programmed.) This is sort of a compromise option. Band is kept, applied to an Artist and shows can still be created using it. Occasionally, a track from a "Band" that is just a solo performer would slip into a show etc. (although if the Solo Performer tag was excluded that would fix that problem). We also solve the problem of having thousands of individual songs neither tagged Band or Solo and the spotty project of tagging such songs. Another advantage is we start thinking of situations where tagging an Artist or Album page is more appropriate than tagging all the individual songs.
- Can artist tags be excluded? If so, I guess we could exclude both Solo Performer and Band to get the solo artist with backing band that has been mentioned. Kelli (talk/contribs) 09:02, July 14, 2008 (AKDT)
- Also, which definition will be used if it goes on the artist page? I assume the "groups that normally perform as a band" definition. Kelli (talk/contribs) 11:20, July 14, 2008 (AKDT)
- Jim (talk/contribs) 08:16, July 14, 2008 (AKDT)
- Mert (talk/contribs) 08:43, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) (I made a show that used gender, so, yeah, it seems we could make shows using Band from the Artists pages.)
- JohnA --JohnA (talk/contribs) 08:45, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) I like this option. I think it is the best of both worlds.
- Doctordoug (talk/contribs) 09:11, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) Yup seems a good compromise
- Ruben (talk/contribs) 09:41, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) I can't say I've been religiously following this debate, but this option definitely makes the most sense. Putting "Band" on every song would be like adding "Female" and "Male" genders to each song... technically correct but redundant! I must emphasise my lack of musical knowledge though, and the advice I give should not replace advice and or consulting expertise of your solicitor or attorney. Thank you.
- E.D. Egg (talk/contribs) 11:30, July 14, 2008 (AKDT) This works for me (although I'm not opposed to using it on songs). The reason I like it on songs is that i use the tags to help me figure out what to request, and knowing that it's a band (song) might make a difference one way or the other. But this compromise option would be fine by me.
- sparx (talk/contribs)
- Define Band as a group of musicians who regularly play together and assign the tag to the artist page. If the artist picture has more than one face, it's probably a band. Cub Driver 07:52, July 15, 2008 (AKDT)
