Larry Zarella is a guitar-playing singer/songwriter. Perhaps his most popular song on Whole Wheat Radio is his cover of John Prine's "In a Town This Size." Larry's music is a perfect combination of heartfelt sincerity and fun. His voice has a rare, magical quality and his guitar playing is uniquely his own. Larry is an instant pleasure to listen to.
Originally from Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, he attended Boston's Berklee College Of Music where he majored in vocal performance and music theory. After a summer of hiking, fishing and camping, in and around Alaska's Denali National Park, he decided to make Talkeetna, Alaska his home, and did for many years making a name for himself and his band, Denali Cooks, Alaska's very popular party and festival band. In 2006 Zarrella released his fifth CD, No Place Special. Larry's main directive is to use his music to help others. He is actively and continuously involved in raising both funds for and awareness of causes in need. Larry promotes his new CD in conjunction with Sanfilippo Syndrome, and portions of the proceeds are donated to No Place Special.
Larry is responsible for building the Wheat Hole. Pictures of Larry building the Wheat Hole, particularly those with his shirt off, may be responsible for a large measure of his popularity with roughly half of the wheatheads. The other half appreciate his singing voice, and his great sense of humor in his songs.
