Charlotte Kendrick

I was born and raised mostly in NY, just north of NYC, with my older brother and a string of dogs. I liked everything my brother liked including Legos, treehouses and the A-Team. So when my brother picked up a guitar in grade school, I did too. While he played Jimi Hendrix, I played James Taylor.

I kept it up throughout high school and college, but wasn’t sold on pursuing music professionally. I hadn’t written any songs yet, and didn’t think I could. Not knowing what to do with my life after graduation, I decided to at least make myself useful while I figured it out, and joined the Peace Corps.

I taught health education in Kokomian, a small village on the western border of Cote d’Ivoire in West Africa. And when I wasn't working, I spent time with my friends in the village, and wrote songs. I started to see how much I'd taken for granted, and didn't want to pass up the chance to do something I love for a living, when so many people never get the chance to choose.

After 2 years, I came home, moved to NYC, and got a job bartending. I went to open mics at the Sidewalk Cafe and soon met producer and fellow-musician, Dan Rowe. Dan and I started working together on my debut album, I Get Stupid. A few weeks before its release, Dan accompanied me on bass at the Village Underground, and has been on stage with me ever since.

We released a live album, Live at the Roger Smith, in 2004, and took off on a self-booked 40+ date tour across the country. We put 10,000 miles on our car, played folk ballads in biker bars (I booked that one), and ran out of gas in the middle-of-nowhere, Nevada,... at midnight. It was a long but invaluable trip, and since then, we have been touring as much as we can.

In 2006, I signed a publishing deal with sonaBLAST! Records, the New York-based independent label that has worked with such emerging fellow grass roots artists as Mark Geary and Kelly McRae. They are currently re-releasing I Get Stupid, helping me get more exposure, and introducing me to a whole new audience.

And finally, we’re releasing our second studio album, North of New York in June of ’07, and looking forward to touring behind it for the summer!

So that’s the basic story so far. Thanks for reading, and I hope you like our music.
