Adding Video Tutorial

From WWR

Jump to: navigation, search

This is a tutorial on how to add videos to an artist's page. But keep in mind that videos can be added to any page here on Whole Wheat by using the same Video and nowiki tags as is shown in the tutorial.

Contents

This tutorial uses the Recently added music as a source for discovering artist pages that could use videos. This is by no means the only way to do this, but it's one way.

Recently Added Music

Go to the left menu and click on Recently added music.

Choose An Artist

Choose an artist from those listed.

Check the artist's page to see if there have been any videos added. In this case, you can see there are no videos.

Choose Video Host

Scroll down on the artist page and you will see you have two choices...Google Video or YouTube. You can click on either one or both if you wish to search for a video by the artist.

In this case I chose YouTube and this brought me to their search page. I chose the song Silver because it is a tune that is in Whole Wheat's library.

Once on the video page, you will see the Embed code in this box. Highlight and copy the code.

Once I have copied the code, I paste it into notepad for convenience and then I go back to the artist's page.

Editing Artist's Page

Once back on the artist's page, just click on the Video link to begin editing.

This will bring you to this page. You see there has been an example placed here with the code. You can leave this example and just move it down the page in case someone else needs it later. But copy the code that is shown in the example and paste the Embed code from the video host between the nowiki tags in place of PUT EMBEDDED CODE HERE FROM YOUTUBE OR GOOGLE. In case this line has been removed, here is an example: {{Video|<nowiki>PLACE EMBEDDED CODE HERE</nowiki>}}

Next, scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click on the Show Preview link. This will give you a chance to see if everything looks right and the video does indeed work as it's designed.

This will render the page preview. In preview mode, the wiki shows you exactly what the page will look like once it is saved.

If the page looks good and the video is functioning, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Save page.

Finished

Once saved, you are finished and can sit back and admire your contribution! ::;)

If you have any problems, please just ask somebody, and if they can't help I'm sure they can direct you to one of us who can.

Additional tips

Added Note by Stickbender: For Windows folks, I find this works very nicely by utilizing the multiple tab browsing feature of Firefox and Internet Explorer. By opening the artist page in a new tab, it reduces the need to do so much clicking. I also open the artists site in an additional tab. This giving me two separate work areas while keeping my original tab intact. I can then review the artist site in one tab, copy something, and simply jump over to my other tab where I opened the Biography editor, paste it and so on. This allows me to easily return to any or all pages without confusion. When finished, I close my extra tabs and there I am back at where I started. To open a link in a new tab one can either 1) Center Click (mouse wheel), or 2) Right click the link and select "Open in new tab". -- Stickbender 14:52 Janurary 25, 2008 (AKST)
